Awassi Express: Total Navigation Package Retrofit
Challenge
SeaTec successfully completed a challenging retrofit on-board a twenty-year old vessel, which had been converted from a container ship to a livestock carrier and laid up for four years. SeaTec supplied and upgraded a total navigation/GMDSS package for the Awassi Express, as well as deploying the latest VSAT and CCTV systems.
Solution
The navigational package installed on the bridge of the Awassi Express included such elements as dual radar and ECDIS equipment, GPS, AIS, speed log and weather fax, along with complete A3 area GMDSS, gyro and repair/restore autopilot systems, and intercom, S-VDR and crew internet applications. Jiang Lin from SeaTec said of the retrofit, “When we first visited the Awassi Express, the bridge was a mess. We co-ordinated the removal of old equipment, restored some of the re-useable systems and installed new equipment where required. We were also involved in planning some of the design, and helping with handover duties. We were delighted to complete the retrofit ahead of schedule, and hope the master and crew of the Awassi Express are pleased with the outcome of our work.”
SeaTec provided consulting, supervising and commissioning services for the project and co-ordinated with the shipyard for the removal and installation of all equipment. SeaTec also oversaw crew training for the newly installed equipment.
