Kibaz: ECDIS and VSAT Installation
Challenge
After an urgent takeover of m/v KIBAZ into V.Ships USA management in India, she received a dispensation to sail to her next port. SeaTec attended to ensure that all systems were functioning to industry standards. The 10 year old vessel had a lot of outdated equipment that was not working correctly. Both radar systems, the Inmarsat C and SSAS units were not working effectively. The vessel also had no ECDIS or backup communications and there was no crew phone/internet facility on board.
Solution
The navigation equipment on board was outdated. Refurbished parts were used to bring the radar back online and ensure it is fully functional. SeaTec also suggested that a brand new SAT-C system be installed to ensure that the SAT-C and SSAS can be upgraded to full working order.
SeaTec also installed a tailored VSAT system to provide crew phone and internet which helped to reduce costs. In addition, a backup communications device was installed to ensure no disruption in communications. This system meets the high standards set by V.Ships.
The Kibaz now sports a new dual ECDIS providing paperless sailing and saving even more on running costs.
Despite the fact that SeaTec’s engineer flew from overseas to attend the vessel, the total cost was much cheaper than it would have been if local engineers had been utilised. The engineer’s electronic experience allowed the superintendent to focus on other areas of importance during the takeover maintenance in the knowledge that the electronics were being dealt with appropriately.
